The Techniques and Principles for the Operating Room book was originally conceived as a guide to the trauma OR for operating room personnel, but many residents embarking on an orthopaedic career will also find it an excellent introduction to trauma surgery.
The book is divided into three distinct sections. Section 1 covers the management of a trauma operating room with parts on conduct, organization and the use, storage and sterilization of equipment. Section 2 outlines the basic principles of trauma care. Written by experienced trauma surgeons it explains the rationale behind various treatment options in a way that assumes little prior knowledge of the subject.
Section 3 is a guide to common trauma operations. A special feature of this section is the full-color illustrations of all instruments and implants for 38 specific trauma operations. Each operation is outlined in an identical format covering indications for surgery, patient and x-ray positioning, anesthesia, disinfecting and draping, OR set-up, as well as a structured step-by-step guide to the procedure itself. Of special interest are the “key points” to surgeon and ORP in every chapter. It is lavishly illustrated not only with line drawings for each step of the procedure but also with photographs of each equipment used.
“The classic and well-established techniques are stressed but the most recent advances in operative fracture care are highlighted. These include the increasing importance of relative stability, biological fixation, minimally invasive techniques, and the correct use of locking compression plate,” says succinctly Thomas Rüedi, MD, AO founding member.
This book is instructive and can serve as an educational guide for those with an inquisitive mind wanting to learn more about the rationale of using one technique as opposed to another. “We trust that our book will also help and reassure any ORP with preparing and assisting at an unfamiliar procedure,” notes Bäuerle.
